Most coffee shops know how to brew great coffee, but it can be trickier when it comes to making coffee yourself. All it takes is learning a few simple tips to brew the perfect cup of coffee every time.

Below lists the simple tips to brew the perfect cup of coffee:

The grind

  • When to grind

Grind your coffee as close as to use as possible.

We grind our coffee every other day or so.

  • How to grind

How much or how little to grind your coffee beans depends on which brewing device you are using. We personally use a French Press, which requires a courser grind. If you grind the beans too fine it can make the coffee taste bitter.

Coarse – French press

Fine – Espresso, drip-coffee

The water

  • Ratio of coffee to water

A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1 Tbsp of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water. You don’t necessarily need to measure this out every time, just eyeball the portions.

If you are using a French press, one good way to tell if you need more water is if the mixture of the coffee grounds and water is very dark. A way to tell you might want more water is if the coffee grounds water mixture is very light brown or even see-through.

  • Water temperature

This is kind of a tricky one, but you want to avoid using too hot of water and too cool of water. Avoid adding boiling water which can make the coffee lose some of its flavor. Also avoid cool water as this may not extract enough of the flavor from the coffee.

  • Type of water

If you think about it, coffee is almost 100% water. Coffee will taste better if you use better water, so aim to use filtered water or something equivalent.

The beans

  • Quality beans

If you are going to focus on just one aspect of making coffee, make it be the quality of the beans you are using. You can brew the coffee perfectly but if you are using lousy beans, the coffee is never going to taste good.

A good rule of thumb when choosing quality beans is to look for single origin beans and organic.

The time

  • Brewing

How long you let your coffee sit before consumption depends on the style of brewing you are using. In general, if you leave coffee sitting for too long it can cause the coffee to taste bitter, and if you don’t let it brew long enough then you won’t extract all of the flavors and benefits from the coffee.

For the French press, optimal time of brewing is 2-4 minutes.

The Storage

  • How to store the coffee

Air, light, and moisture can decrease the freshness of your coffee so make a point to store it in a cool place, in an opaque and air-tight container and avoid clear containers.
