Top 8 Tips To Stay Healthy On Vacation

Vacation can be incredibly beneficial for your health because it is a time to reset and relax, and to get away from stressors of everyday life. However, sometimes vacation can turn into a time that we over indulge and by the end of the vacation you might feel like you need a vacation from your vacation!

The list below will help you to stay in shape and feel great while on vacation.

1. Start each day with exercise

In general, exercising in the morning is the best way to start the day and this is especially true when you are on vacation because it really sets the tone for the day. Exercise boosts your mood, energy, metabolism, and is also great for decreasing jet lag. Start your day with a walk, jog, or bike ride and set a healthy tone to the rest of the day.

2. Choose an indulgent beverage or dessert – not both

Vacation is filled with opportunities to over indulge and a time to make excuses for your choices in treats because hey, you’re on vacation! That’s totally fine and you should let lose, however, this can lead to way too much over indulging to a point where you don’t feel good physically or even mentally. A good way to stop yourself from over indulging but still feel like you are treating yourself is to choose an indulgent beverage like a margarita, or an indulgent food like a piece of cheesecake, but not both.

3. Start each day with a healthy breakfast

Yes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it sets the tone for your meal choices for the rest of the day. What you eat or don’t eat will dictate your mood, appetite, and energy for the rest of the day. Save your indulgent treats for later in the day if you are really craving something not so healthy.

4. Walk as much as you can

Wherever you are vacationing, try to walk and move as much as you can. Aim for 10,000 steps at LEAST to keep yourself active. Walking can actually burn a ton of calories and is low impact so it is easy on your joints. Walking after meals is especially beneficial because it helps to lower blood sugar levels, shunts calories to your muscles, and helps with digestion.

5. Bring healthy snacks

It’s always a good idea to pack healthy snacks that you can munch on when you are traveling, it also can save a lot of money! I recommend high protein bars like Quest bars or Epic bars that are minimally processed and taste amazing.

6. If you will have a kitchen – use it!

This is a great way to make sure you are eating a healthy meal, and to save money! Check out the local market or grocery store and pick out some fresh vegetables and protein. This way you can control everything you are putting into your meal, and you get to take advantage of the kitchen in your hotel or rental. Cooking is also fun to do with friends and family! You could have everyone pick their favorite dish and make it.

7. Use the amenities

If there are tennis courts at your hotel, use them! If you are offered a complimentary yoga class, take it! Take advantage of your hotel’s amenities to keep moving and burning calories, and to get your money’s worth. This is also a great time to try a new activity that you haven’t done before.

8. Carry a water bottle

When you are on vacation, it can sometimes slip your mind to drink water. Keep a water bottle on you at all times to prevent becoming dehydrated, especially with all of the walking and various activities you will be doing. A reusable water bottle is ideal so that you can bring it with you on the plane as well – be sure to carry it through security empty and fill it up one you get to your gate.
